In the News: Let Students Learn Resilience

Posted: September 3, 2015

Joan McCool, director of Buffalo State’s Counseling Center, shared some tips for parents with children in college. McCool urged parents to provide encouragement, connection, and support, and discouraged them from “snowplowing”—clearing their children’s paths so completely that the children “fail to learn life skills that will benefit them in the future,” according to Buffalo News Refresh editor Scott Scanlon.

“What we learn in college is we’re resilient," said McCool, one of the experts quoted in Refresh's recent cover story on the changes parents face as their children leave for school. "Students need love and caring, but don’t go overboard.” advised McCool.
