From the Vice President for Student Affairs

The Division of Student Affairs is excited that you are becoming a Bengal (or considering it!) Our focus as a division of student affairs is supporting student success, connection, and community for students at Buffalo State.

At Buffalo State, diversity and inclusion are who we are, and you will find great opportunities presented through many programs and efforts including our Inclusion and Equity office in the division. Every member of our campus is expected to develop in ways that help them embrace our rich community. One of the ways we ask folks to demonstrate this is through our Campus Compact. Buffalo State’s Compact is an understanding rather than a written document or regulation. The purpose of the compact is to start conversations and interactions about behavior to advocate for the understanding of others when being a part of a shared community. We expect those who are on campus to treat everyone with concern, care, civility, and respect. Our community is purposeful, disciplined, civil, caring, just, and celebrative.

Here on campus, you will find resources to help you accomplish “Finding Your Why” and develop your plan for success. These supports span from our residential halls to various programs and leadership opportunities, to athletics and recreation. You also have the Counseling Center where you have access to free and confidential support whenever you need it. As well as the Weigel Wellness Center. The Career and Professional Education Center provides services to both undergraduate and graduate students. Their services include assistance with career exploration, decision making, selecting, and applying to graduate schools, and finding jobs and internships. The Inclusion and Equity Office makes sure every student on campus feels heard and accepted. You have all these offices and more who are here to support you during your journey at Buffalo State University.

To get the most out of their Buffalo State education, we encourage students to join a club, sport, or consider becoming a leader in student government. Taking time outside of courses is a wonderful way to explore new opportunities, apply what you are learning, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of our campus. Our scenic campus houses the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Ferguson Planetarium, and right next to the campus is the world-famous AKG Art Museum. You will also find the Buffalo Zoo and the Buffalo History Museum nearby. Beyond the Elmwood Village neighborhood, there are many historical and cultural spaces to explore such as The Freedom Wall, African American Heritage Corridor, Canalside, and the Hispanic Heritage Cultural Institute. Getting involved on campus and in the Buffalo community are some of the many ways to enhance your college experience. Buffalo State takes pride in making sure students are engaged, included, and supported in all dimensions of their lives.

I believe your time here will be one of the most memorable and transformative experiences of your life. Never hesitate to reach out to anyone in the division or campus for assistance. You can reach people in the Division of Student Affairs by looking up information on each office’s website, via email at stuaff@buffalostate.edu or social media, @lifeatbuffalostate. My colleagues and I look forward to helping you achieve all that you want to accomplish and contribute to the world. We wish you nothing but success in the academic year. Go Bengals!
